The Ragdoll Breed

Our handsome Benjamin

The “Ragdoll” name is acquired from the announced tendency of individuals from the original breeding cats to go limp and relaxed when held. They are the second largest domestic breed of cat, followed by the Maine Coon Breed. Ragdolls are known for their affectionate characteristics and tendencies that they have. In particular Ragdolls are known for their easy, docile, friendly laid-back temperament and can be known for their dog like tendencies, they thrive on human interaction as well as with other animals and generally enjoy being in pairs, in particular they would struggle being left on their own for prolonged periods of time. As such it is important that you have the time and commitment a ragdoll needs.

The Ragdoll cat has a silky smooth semi-longhaired coat with the most beautiful blue eyes, the breed can take around 4-5 years to reach full maturity. Fully developed males can often tip the scales at upwards of over 6kg, with the proportionately smaller females weighing between 4kg and 6kg. These gentle cats have long, substantial bodies with sturdy boning to match.

The traditional colours include seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red and cream along with tortie and tabby markings. Ragdolls typical patterns include colour pointed, mitted and bicolour.

Brief History

The Ragdoll Breed was first developed in the early 1960s by a woman called Anne Baker who was a breeder in California in the United States. The matriarch of the breed involved a white long haired cat of Angora like appearance who was called Josephine, a seal mitted male named Daddy Warbucks as well as a solid black cat named Blackie. Daddy Warbucks was described as being ‘seal mitted with a white nose blaze and white tail tip’. He was mated with one of Josephine's daughters named Buckwheat as well as her half-sister Fugianna. These cats all lay the foundations of what we now know as the Ragdoll Breed. Almost 20 years later in 1981 the ragdoll breed was first imported into the United Kingdom by Pat Brownsell (Patriarca Ragdolls) and Lulu Rowley (Petit-Lu Ragdolls) from the Blossom-Time cattery in the United States.
